OVERVIEW

Çırağan Palace was once a real Ottoman palace. It’s now a five-star hotel owned by the world renowned Kempinski Hotels chain. Originally built by the sons of Sultan Abdülâziz and designed by a famous Turkish architect called Nigoğayos Balyan between 1863 and 1867, the palace is in fact the last example from this era.

Destroyed by fire in 1910, the palace was afterwards used as a football stadium before being bought by a Japanese corporation in 1898 who restored the palace and added a modern hotel complex in the adjacent garden. The palace was recently renovated again by the Kempinski group (2007), who have created its most luxurious incarnation yet – a refined oasis of calm in the centre of Istanbul.

Located on the European shore of the Bosporus between Beşiktaş and Ortaköy (a 10-minute drive to Taksim), the hotel is today the first member of the Leading Hotels of the World in Turkey. It still consists of two parts, the restored palace itself and a grand deluxe five star hotel complex. In both cases, high marble walls protect guests from the outside world, offering intimatre serenity away from the hustle bustle.

The palace rooms are delectable, and range from the Superior Bosphorus View Rooms (34 square meters with a 45 degree view of the Bosphorus), Family rooms (which don’t have balconies), Deluxe Bosphorus View Room (67 sqm) and Grand Deluxe Rooms (50 square meters). All come with tasteful furniture, seating areas, a working desk, a safety box and a bathroom with bathtub and shower.

In the other hotel you can choose from a Bahce Suite, located on the ground floor of the hotel building, the Vali/Vezir Suite on the 5th floor or, if you want to splash out, the Pasha and Presidential Suite, which are 156 sqm, and furnished with a private living room area and separate bedrooms with separate bathrooms with private shower cabinets ( all come with panoramic Bosphorus views). You can also book one of the three splendid cabanas, which have more privacy and are located right nearthe water.

The hotel’s award-winning culinary team create highly memorable food – choose from half dozen restaurants ranging from a dedicated fish restaurant to the award-winning Tuğra Restaurant, famous for its refined classical Turkish and Ottoman Cuisine.

The spa -- managed by Sanitas -- has all kinds of pampering options, from massages and detoxes, and there are outside and inside pools (including a wonderful infinity pool), and no less than 20 meeting rooms (accommodating from 10 to 1000 people) for business travellers.

It’s a short stroll from the hotel to Ortakoy, a charming area brimming with seafood restaurants, antique and craft shops and a buzzy atmosphere. At weekends guests can explore the street market that takes place right next to the famed Ortakoy Mosque and it’s just a short taxi ride to Akmerkez,an award winning shopping complex.
