OVERVIEW

It’s an odd word, puding. To English speakers it’s vaguely reminiscent of pudding, the word sometimes used for a dessert but in Turkish the term refers to an artisanal artform that stretches back to antiquity, a blend of sand and pebbles that ossify over time and that has traditionally been used for a range of construction purposes from floors and motifs to scupltures.

The technique is widely used in Mediterranean courtyards since in the summer it conserves splashed water and generates freshness, while at the same time gives barefoot walkers a nice foot massage. Needless to say you can find a plethora of puding examples at the Puding Suite Hotel, which transports the visitor back in time to the Ottoman era.

A replica of an old town villa, this small but charming hotel - which has just six rooms – brims with impressive details quite aside from the stonework, like the handmade bathroom tiles, teak detailing and elegantly designed rooms that combine old walls with mod cons like Plasma TVs and wifi internet.

Set over two floors, the hotel packs a lot in: out back you’ll find a palm tree-studded courtyard and a small swimming pool that comes in particularly handy during the summer months. Inside you’ll find a bar (with fireplace), library and relaxation room. And while there’s no spa, the rooms all come with a hydro-massage bath and sauna.

A few doors along the road you’ll find the hotel’s restaurant, Patio, a rustic yet refined place with a gorgeous back garden surrounded by ancient walls and an inventive pan-Mediterranean cuisine from pastas and risottos to Turkish classics and Greek dishes.

The hotel is perfectly located in – and entirely in keeping with - the surrounding old town of Antalya (Kaleichi), an enchanting network of cobbled streets, breezy bars and restaurants and a pretty Roman harbour. Around 300 meters away is Hadrian’s gate, just one of the city’s famous landmarks. An ideal blend of culture, history and comfort.
